GRADUATE MERIT AWARD PROGRAMThe 2010 Scholarship Program
Please remember to send your donation for 2010 Graduate Merit Award Program by June 15,2010.
One of EWNJ's priorities is to provide encouragement and a strong foundation of leadership development for the next generation of female executives. To advance this goal, EWNJ established the Graduate Merit Award Program in 1986, a scholarship program to benefit women who reside in New Jersey and are pursuing graduate level degrees at New Jersey colleges and universities. Since that time, EWNJ has provided over 300 deserving women with more than $1,000,000 in scholarships, an accomplishment no other women's organization in New Jersey can match.
“ At a time when the world is short of causes for celebration, here is a candidate: within the next few months women will cross the 50% threshold and become the majority of the American workforce. Women’s economic empowerment is arguably the biggest social change of our times. Just a generation ago, women were largely confined to repetitive, menial jobs. They were routinely subjected to casual sexism and were expected to abandon their careers when they married and had children. Today they are running some of the organisations that once treated them as second-class citizens. Millions of women have been given more control over their own lives.” (The Economist January 2010)
We have a long way to go to gain parity in the workforce. Through our continued strong support of women who are committed to achieving their educational goals we will make inroads for future generations of women.
In 2009, EWNJ awarded scholarship grants of $2,000 to $5,000 each to deserving women at New Jersey institutions of higher learning. Named awards were:

Quotes from Past Scholarship Award Winners:“Two years ago when I first realized that it was within my ability to fulfill a lifelong dream to attend law school, I didn't realize how challenging my journey would be. Already a Master's student, I was also a single working parent of six, with five children still at home. I thought I understood the hurdles I would face in completing my law degree and my Master's program concurrently. However, the financial reality of attending school full time with no employment income and as the sole support for a family of six was more than I had anticipated. The Executive Women of New Jersey's scholarship award in 2009 made it possible for my family to make it through my first semester of law school. Without EWNJ I would have been forced to defer my law school dream for possibly years. The funds from my scholarship enabled me to provide for my family yet still study and achieve a high average, putting me in the top of my class. The grades I earned enabled me to obtain an internship with a federal judge this summer. Thank you, EWNJ, for supporting my dream and for enabling me to take a path to eventually be able to help other New Jersey families and parents.” Courtney Raphael, Rutgers Law School and School of Management and Labor Relations
“I am currently in the 5th year of my MD/Ph.D. program. I’m finishing up my thesis research on autoimmune disease Lupus and have published one paper in a peer-reviewed journal. I’m also doing working on aging as part of an NIH Fellowship. I’m looking forward to finishing my program and medical residency, and starting my own career in academic medicine. Thank you EWNJ!” Rivka Stone, UMDNJ
“I’m very appreciative of the award I received in 2008 and I continue to achieve my educational goals. I’m working towards my M.A. in Counseling and License Professorial Counselor (LPC) and I’m completing an Internship at Trinitas Hospital, at the Intense Out Patient (IOP) for substance abuse. I love being there and find it to be a very valuable learning experience.” Lorrie McGough, Trinitas Hospital “I finished my Master’s program at the Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University in December and have since started working at U.S. Fund for UNICEF. I am supporting UNICEF's live saving work around the world through my work on the Corporate and Foundation Partnerships team. I am incredibly grateful to have been selected for the EWNJ Scholarship and the Awards Dinner was one of my proudest moments. Thank you again for your generosity!” Michele Petruzziello, US Fund for UNICEF
"I wanted to let everyone at EWNJ know of my recent success! I was named Vice Principal at Montgomery Township High School. Montgomery Township High School is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School made up of over 1800 students and 140 teachers. Attaining a position in a school such as this has been a goal of mine since I started my Masters program in 2003. I believe my EWNJ President's Scholarship and recognition played a key role in helping me stand out in my interview. I included my scholarship description and a picture of myself and Governor Cody with my cover letter and resume. I also talked about the award in my interviews. The experience at the Scholarship Dinner last fall continues to be a source of pride for me. The resolve I received from Governor Cody that night hangs on the wall of my new office along with pictures of that night. EWNJ's financial support and, more importantly the honor of being named the President's Award Scholar by Marcy Locastro, has made my dream of becoming an administrator come true. Thank you to everyone at EWNJ for all your support and for helping me with my achievement."
