EWNJ Statement on the Passing of New Jersey Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver

Executive Women of New Jersey (EWNJ) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our state’s most distinguished and pioneering women civic leaders, Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver. Her legacy as a mentor to countless young women throughout the state in the public and private sectors is well-known and deservingly celebrated. Her longtime friendship and generous support for EWNJ have significantly contributed to our shared vision of breaking down barriers for women in leadership and advocating for diversity in positions of power.

As Assembly Speaker, she made history as New Jersey’s first Black woman to lead a legislative body and only the second in the nation. Later, she became the first Black woman elected to statewide office. Her remarkable impact will undoubtedly inspire many future women leaders to follow the paths she trailblazed.

EWNJ sends our heartfelt condolences to Lieutenant Governor Oliver’s family, her friends and colleagues, and the numerous women whose lives she positively influenced.
